Exhibition Statement
The basic rationale uses a motor-driven device to replace the two people who are responsible for swinging the rope in the game of rope skipping. A projector is used to create the shadow of the participant and the image of moon.
The goal of this installation is to create a poetic space of serenity. The sweet childish game -rope skipping- reappears in a total different environment - moon in outer space. The core of this installation is to evoke a sense of unfamiliarity by changing only one element of the familiar activity. In another word, this installation offers a possibility for the viewers to experience the group activity themselves alone. Viewers and participants can feel this possibility by understanding the mechanism of the device even if they do not slip into Gallery 148 at midnight and play with this device. But I strongly recommend they use it this way. There is no digital camera and video recorder anywhere in this room. So there is no one to share this experience with. Participants shall learn to enjoy themselves alone, but it would also be fun to encounter some strangers in the space.
